Algeria Condemns France Amid Westerna Sahara Position

On Thursday, Algeria expressed “great regret and strong denunciation” regarding the French government’s decision to recognize an autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region “within Moroccan sovereignty.”

Some news outlets have indicated a possible diplomatic change in the official position of France regarding the Sahara issue.

The Algerian foreign ministry stated that Algeria was informed of France’s decision in recent days. The ministry also mentioned that Algeria would consider all consequences of this decision and hold the French government solely responsible.

The French Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment on the Algerian statement.

Algeria’s position on the Western Sahara conflict supports implementing a United Nations plan that includes a self-determination referendum. Algeria views Morocco’s presence in the Sahara as an occupation.
