Public SNRT acquires majority stake in Medi1 Radio

The Moroccan Radio and Television Company (SNRT) has officially declared its acquisition of an 86.3% stake in the capital of Medi1 Radio.

According to an announcement from the Competition Council, it has received a notification regarding a proposed economic consolidation project. This project entails the National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT) acquiring 86.3% of the share capital and voting rights of Radio Méditerranée International (RMI).

The Competition Council’s press release states that this acquisition affects the sectors of radio program broadcasting and advertising management.

The involvement of SNRT in Medi1 Radio marks another significant milestone in the implementation of the unified public audiovisual center, known as the PAPU, which was initially announced back in 2006.

This acquisition solidifies the status of state media as the holding company already control SNRT, 2M, and Medi 1 TV. The process began with the acquisition of all shares of the 2M channel and 30% of the shares of Medi 1 TV. It is expected to reach its completion with the formation of “SNRT Holding.”

State media have often been criticized in Morocco for bias towards the state institutions as well as the quality of its productions.
