Senegal wins CHAN Championship against Algeria

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) final on February 4th featured the two top teams of the competition, Algeria and Senegal. Although there were few scoring opportunities, the match still lived up to its promises and kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

The Algerian fans gathered at the Nelson Mandela stadium in Algiers to cheer on their team, as they had been favorites to win after conceding no goals throughout the entire competition. Despite their efforts to score against the Senegalese, the Algerians were unable to find the back of the net even after regulation and extra time.

The Senegalese put up a strong defense and held off the Algerian attack, especially towards the end of the match. During the penalty shootout, it seemed as if the Algerians had secured the win with a missed shot by the Senegalese (Ndiaye). However, Aimen Mahious, nicknamed “Jorginho” for his unique way of taking shots on goal, finally broke the deadlock and put the ball past the Senegalese goalkeeper.

The next Senegalese player, O. Diouf, did not falter and was followed by Kendouci who unfortunately hit the bar. In the end, the Teranga lions emerged as the champions of CHAN 2023, just as they did with the AFCON 2022 trophy in Cameroon on February 6th, 2022. It seems that February football finals are a good omen for Senegal.
